Opening and Sgt @ Arms Report

President Paul welcomed us to the meeting.
Nancy did a reading about Native wisdom and how the natural world was respected.
Adam, our newest member, did the 4 way test.
Jim McPherson did the Innvocation and a toast to Rotary was proposed.

Sargeant at Arms, Nancy,  said we had 18 outstanding members present and one Zoomer.
Guests: our speaker Kim Decker,  two Rosannes associated with Johnny J and Larry B. Also Del and Lynn, both guests of Nancy from the Gaslight District.
No immediate birthdays but I think Andrew Leith and Rena have one coming up. Sounds like Rena does not want to remember this one. see below.
50/50 Draw
Paul Cody is psychic and predicted his ticket would come up and it did. But not enough mojo to conjure the Ace. Steve B. was the second Loozer.
Announcements

Brian said that he re-posted a Facebook post of the Child Witness Centre. We have given them support over the years.
Nancy reminded us of Our Christmas Party this weekend at GCC. A sign-up list was circulated. Bring stuff for Baby Butts. ( Women's Crisis Centre) Those bringing items will be entered in a draw to win a box of Attends. Not Really but it will be fun.
Also still one spot open for Lang's Dinner on Dec 12th. Nancy is still accepting stuff for the Bridges...that dinner on Dec 5th.

Club Opportunities
Larry B is looking for speakers for the last part of Pauls year.  Also we need a bulletin editor for the second week of the month..   Pay and benefits to be negotiated.
Also we may need some of the 'backup Editors "to jump in and fill some bulletin spots through December and January. This will help Larry out with his meeting schedule etc.
Good news
Rena said she was heading to Mexico next week with her sister and a friend. Some recovery time may be needed. Happy Birthday.
Paul Cody was walking his dog and found a $5 bill. What can I say.
Vanessa is leaving for Miami on Saturday and on the way back will see a Leafs and 49er's game.
Milja is home from a great holiday in Costa Rica. She missed the Hurricane rain but some how managed to soak her passport and phone. The shower is not a good place to hide your valuables.
Doctor Tom is part of an Art Show at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts ( Near City Hall) this Saturday. Opens at 1pm with some light nibblies.
Jim McPherson said he ate a great steak but then some of it got stuck in his gullet. He had to visit the ER. Think Hamburger .
Nancy thanked those who brought stuff for the Bridges and Women's Crisis Shelter.
Matt wasn't here but I know his team, the Laurier Golden Hawks, will play Western this weekend  in Kingston for the ------Cup. Folks, this is a big thing. We may have to send out search parties for him.
Today's Program
Heidi introduced Kim Decker who is CEO of the Cambridge YWCA.
She is here to talk about the Homeless Women's Emergency Centre. ( not to be confused with the already existing Women's Crisis Centre).
She expects this Emergency Centre will be up and running in the next few weeks. It has funding from the Region for operating expenses.
In a region of 600,000 people there are no specific Homeless shelters for women.
Project Willow and other studies show an extreme need. There is no safe place for homeless women. They experience violence, theft, exposure to the elements and lack of support on a daily basis.
This shelter will be a 20 bed, 24/7 unit in the basement of Grace Bible Church. Renovations and furniture acquisition is underway, They are fundraising for $125,000 to cover these expenses.
The shelter will have connections with ACCWA, Langs, Porchlight counselling etc.

So far there is no Transitional Housing or Supportive Housing in the City of Cambridge where these homeless women could go after coming to the emergency centre.
Kim said that it will take a while for this shelter to build trust with homeless women.
Go to the YWCA website for more info.

We presented Kim with a cheque for $5000. from our club. Well done, club.
A meaningful thankyou to Kim was given by Rena.
Club Assembly next week. No Guests,
Todd heard that Dr Murray Pearson's scarecrow had won an award. He/she (the scarecrow) was OUTSTANDING in his/her field. ( funnier if you know the context, which I don't)
Just 33 days to Christmas!
