Opening and Sgt @ Arms Report
President Paul McM opened the meeting promptly at 12:30 - yes, it does seem necessary for him to ring the bell a little harder each week...  perhaps because we're all getting older...

Nancy Y - provided an Indigenous Moment, speaking about the book A Two-Spirit Journey, an autobiography of a lesbian Ojibwa-Cree Elder.  Nancy found the book quite moving and insightful, and purchased a copy to be shared among the membership - thank you Nancy!

Erica T provided the Invocation, followed by 'someone' (sorry) reciting the 4-Way Test, and Pres Paul toasting Canadians and Rotarians around the world.

We had the pleasure/honour of inducting Russ Hooper and Erik Reed, who for a few moments at least, were the newest Rotarians in the world!

Nancy Y informed us we had 19 members present, including Randy on Zoom, and two guests today - Amanda, our guest speaker, and Clay, a past and potential member.

50/50 Draw
Johnny Smooth was at the helm  - with $1,170 on the line to be won - Larry B had the first ticket drawn, but failed to locate the Ace...

But the second ticket was Heidi P's, which was purchased and being monitored by Larry B....  the winning second ticket was drawn by Larry B, and when Larry B was choosing a card for Heidi P...   HE PULLED THE ACE!!!

Congrats Heidi!!!!!
Announcements
Mike H - Euchre night is coming up on May 6 - $25 - please contact Mike if you haven't already - it's a great night!

Milja G -  Tacos Y Tequila is this coming Friday night - May 2!!
       - the biggest ask is please, try to sell some more tickets :)
       - lots of prizes, FREE food, a couple hot sauce vendors, dancing lessons, it's going to be great!

Pres Paul McM informed us he'll be away but Suzanne will be there!
Good news
Nancy Y - 'There is a time to land, and there is a time to leave'

Nancy announced she will be moving to St. Catharines in the coming weeks

She wanted to thank the many members who helped her learn all about Rotary, and put out a call for members to get more involved.  We have a few members who do a lot, and it's important for others to assist - please volunteer to help, and say yes when asked - it's important for the club, and the community.  (Nancy said this SO much better than I am relaying here...)

Pres Paul McM   thanked Nancy for her incredible contributions in such a short time.  This sure is a loss for us, but a gain for St. Catharines.

Paul TC announced he won a $700 putter!!!  He is on quite the winning streak the last few weeks!

Larry B - took a chance and assumed, in her absence, that Heidi P wanted to donate $20 of her recent winnings!

Pres Paul McM  - was leaving after the meeting for an annual golf/fishing trip in Florida - stopping in Nashville along the way!
Today's Program
Mike H - introduced today's guest speaker - Amanda Horne, the Executive Director of the Hespeler Village Neighbourhood Association - the HVNA

HVNA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the residents of Hespeler Village, Cambridge.

They empower our community through a variety of initiatives, including:
After-school programs
Youth drop-in programs
Community events
Family outreach services
Leadership development programs for youth
Volunteer opportunities

It is so vital to have organizations such as the HVNA in our communities - to bring people together, go help foster friendships, and build a 'real' community.

One of their bigger challenges right now is that their office space is part of a large community room that is rented out 6 or 7 times a year, necessitating them to move out for 2-4 days every few weeks!

They'd love to build a 3,500 square foot building right up against the existing arena building, then they'd have their own dedicated space.

Thank you Amanda for all you do for your community!!!

Remember everyone - no regular Thursday meeting next week - hope to see you all at the Newfoundland Club Friday for Tacos Y Tequila!!!
