Opening and Sgt at Arms Report
President Heidi opened the meeting at 12:35 and recited the 4 Way Test from memory.
It's the middle of vacation season, so we had 15 members, and two guests.  Our two guests were Julie Bilodeau, aspiring member, and our speaker Aaron Brokenshire, son of Larry.
50-50 Draw

  There was no 50/50 draw,
Good News
- Linda - Her daughter recovered from a Covid-layoff, getting a great job in Mississauga as a technical writer.
- Our guest Julie's husband also got a job at Pepsi Co., but now she needs to think harder about daycare.  Not an easy challenge right now.
- My oldest daughter Alison is coming to visit us this long weekend, so we're going to learn more about her new job in Aylmer.  So far she seems to be loving it!

Announcements and Upcoming Events
- Larry, Jim J, and Brian are forming the new new Committee for Historical Excellence which will convert the club's accumulation of Banker's Boxes (paperwork and photos) into proper electronic archives.  If you are the kind of person who can do this without needing to read it all, they offer you the opportunity to join this exciting new group!
- Rena debriefed us on the Coping Center work over the weekend.  Thanks to all who took part.  It was a great day and they got a lot done, clearing the Rotary Garden.  Johnny Smooth is going to get a Mennonite birdhouse (birds of other religions also welcome).  The dedication of the new space TBA.
- Prez Heidi - Outdoor in-person meetings at GCC may be possible in the coming weeks.  Read your emails for the notice.
- Mike - The Thanksgiving Roses 2020 campaign is definitely on, and the committee is at work on it.  Details will be announced soon.

Program
Larry introduced his son Aaron Brokenshire, and gave us some background of Aaron's impressive career as an athletic and coach.
But that was just the background.  Aaron spoke to us about his life experience since discovering that he had a life-threatening condition 5 years ago, at age 43.  SVT is a condition in which the heart can race uncontrollably, in his case up to 250 beats per minute.  He was given the choice of either taking a powerful drug that would reduce his quality of life, or waiting 6 months for surgery.
But that wasn't even what his story was about.
Aaron spoke to us about his mental and emotional response to the diagnosis, how that undermined his life, and how he recovered from it.  He spent some time consumed with fear and worry, not sleeping, retreating from the world, and deep depression.  After getting some encouragement from a therapist, he was able to train himself to eliminate negative or unproductive thoughts and channel his energy in positive directions, including returning to intense sports he had enjoyed before the diagnosis.

Aaron has written a book about it to encourage others in similar situations "How Good Could You Be", available on amazon.
It was an inspiring story, and also very interesting to learn that people can train themselves to think differently.
Todd thanked our speaker and said he is going to read the book because he worries way too much about his kids.  That's something he inherited from one of his parents.

Paul M shared a short tale about a typical Texas motorist.  I'm giving this one 8/10 laugh factor, rating PG for a small amount of language.
