Paul T. intro'd today's speaker, Sheri Roberts Sheri Robets is a dedicated Mom to two boys 16 and 12 she is a disability advocate and community leader. Sheri serves as City Councillor for the Cambrige and also works with Independent Living Waterloo Region. It was quite the heart wrenching presentation as Sheri was well on her way to change the world as so many kids at 18 are when she was involved in a horrible car accident which left her with a complete spinal chord injury and drastically changed the direction of her life. At one point both lungs collapsed on ventilators her parents being told she likely won't make it - BUT - Sheri's determination proved them wrong. She bounced back and knew what she wanted to do with so much grit and determination. After knowing first hand the struggles and challenges of her own journey, Sheri was determined to make a difference and after graduating from McMaster university she spent many years expanding her own knowledge and educating others about disability issues.has done many presentations to so many For the past 26 years, Sheri has shared her expertise on a wide range of topics including AODA Customer Service regulation training, adapted sports and fitness - she is actually curling at the National level at our club in a few weeks - preventing risk taking behaviour in teens, peer pressure avoidance and very much disability awareness. She has written the Best Practice module for " Best Practices for Accessibility Facility Design Standard" She also brought the Stop Gap solution to Cambridge. She has done extensive Advocacy work. Sheri definitely has a unique gift in connecting with her audience with her kind smile and down to earth candid story telling. The resilience and determination was humbling and she is committed to advocating for dsialbity inclusion and empowerment while balancing so many other responsibilities. Tom E - thanked Sheri and perhaps there was some curling challenge as we aren't quite sure if Tom or Paul were taking the credit of Sheri making it to the Nationals. President Paul closed the meeting and there were two jokes both bad so I can't remember. I did find one - Why do seagulls fly over the sea? If they flew over the bay, they would be called bagels.... |
