Badar Shamim from the Brampton Rotary Club is our guest speaker today. He was driven here by Vijay Kotamarti who is treasurer of their club and has a reliable car. Badar is the D7080 Polio Chair. He has been a member of Brampton Rotary since 2005. He came to Canada as a teenager from Pakistan. He went to Brock University and has been in the Portfolio Management business for 23 years . He has been married to Saima since 2011. They enjoy golf and travel. Polio was eradicated from North America in 1978. An enterprising District Governor in the Philipines thought it would be a good thing to do world-wide and got Rotary International involved. In 2018 Badar joined Past Polio Chair Hajira Wilson to participate in National Polio Immunization Day in Pakistan. Things are improving. In 2022 there were only 30 cases of wild polio worldwide, 20 were in Pakistan, partly due to the resistance of Taliban in Afganistan. There was one case in the US, partly due to immunization resistance. Women make better Polio immunization ambassadors than men. You can join the battle by becoming a Polio Plus Society Member and donate $100 US /year. Go to the D7080 website and join Polio Plus. Bill Gates will match you $ for $. Harry Edgar had some relevant history. In 1985 we were part of D709 which extended in to NY state. Ted Turner, the DG visited every club to push the polio eradication effort. And he didn't drive so others had to drive him. Badar was thanked and we promised to sponsor 10 Polio shots in his honour. Todd: 10 +10= 20, 11+11= 22 or twenty too. The accountants in the group are still perplexed. See y'all in May. |
