Paul Mc. introduced our Guest speaker Bridget Jensen and she is the better half of Noah Jensen a Rotarian of the club in the past- and again soon. Bridget having three kids of her own and knows the benefits of great sleep hygiene for babies and infants - it was so important for kids to have great sleep that she opened her own company called Better Bedtime. Her business now incorporates Adults and presentations to companies globally on sleep and the importance of sleep hygeine. There are now 8 who work together in the company. Sleep hygiene is just as important as working out and eating properly - Bridget shared a few tips to create a good space and better sleep habits. Create a calming routine - make sure you go to bed at same time every night and perform same activities every night as part of your routine - start this 30-60 min before you want to go to bed. Other ideas- de-clutter so your bedroom is a quite, cool and clean space - get rid of the screen time, if you have to watch TV be careful with what you watch - CNN or stressful shows may keep you up. Limit your naps to short times and before 3pm- try to avoid wine, food or drinks with high sugar or caffeinnated beverages. Try to have some herbal teas, cherries, walnuts foods that have natural melatonin (of which melatonin pills Bridget is no t a fan) Try meditation, deep breathing or taking a Bath. Write in a journal which gets out the thoughts that may bother you or that may be on your mind writing down some things you are grateful for - practice calming excercises. If you do wake and cannot fall back to sleep it may be good to get up out of bed and read so your body is trained that bedroom is for sleep. Try not to get anxious if you wake and practice some deep breathing or meditation. Bridget mentioned there were early risers and late night owls and also those that are intermittent or wake up frequently - which will be temporary sleepers. Each are unique and you need to follow your rhythm but no matter what type of sleeper you are you need a routine which will help provide better, more solid sleep. If you do need advice Bridget's website is great and her team would be able to help - she did an excellent presentation giving everyone some healthy tips to create better sleep habits. If I have left something out apologies as my notes were all at work - my memory still works as I am not quite as senior as some of the Rotarians ........Jim J..... |
