Opening and Sgt at Arms Report
The Zoom meeting for May 14 was opened up at 12 noon for some fellowship prior to the official beginnings - always a great time in the week to re-connect :)

Today's meeting is brought to you by the letter S, as in Sarcasm….

President Chad started off the meeting promptly at 12:30 and pulled double duty by reciting the 4-Way Test, followed by a toast to Canada, Rotary, and Rotarians around the world.

We had 21  members and 4 guests:
  • Dani Bristow - speaker
  • Sandy from the Mississauga Rotary Club
  • Michael Lawrie, District Governor
  • Aldo, Burlington Rotary Club

50-50 Draw

There was no 50/50 draw, which means Paul T. saved another $40 this week
Good News
This was the week of good news that wasn't.  Did I mention that this week's bulletin is brought to us by the letter S?

Keith shared that his two grandsons were celebrating birthdays, but he and Sherri can't see them because of COVID.  Happy Birthday Blake and Deacon.  Sucks to be you Grandpa

Tom shared that his grandson, David, had an accident and had to get stitches for the first time.  Great News! Congratulations to the whole family

Finally, Aldo shared that the Burlington Club's Ribfest, Rotary's largest, has been cancelled.  Exceptional news, at least for the Pigs.

The group's homework for the week is to look up "good news" in the dictionary.

Oh wait, hot off the wire, finally some good news.  The Prime Minister has announced a financial aid package for Canadian Pig farmers to help offset the lost revenue from Ribfest cancellations!

Editors note: The financial aid package isn't really true, I just made that up.  Kinda like CNN

Program

Roger introduced our speaker, Dani Bristow.  Dani is the Volunteer Program Manager at Shelter Box Canada.

Shelter Box Canada is a charitable organization that is an off chute of a Rotary Club Project

Shelter Box Canada envisions a world where no family is without shelter after a disaster.

They respond to multiple disasters at any given time and currently operate in 10 different countries.

There are more than 88 million people in the world that do not have safe shelter and only 1 in 5 families receive relief after a disaster.

Shelter Box Canada has help over 1.5 million people recover from disasters since their inception.  They believe that shelter is more than just a roof over your head, that it is a home for struggling families to help them re-build.

The Shelter Box is aptly named as it is literally a box that provides all the necessary "things" to provide shelter.  A typical Shelter Box will contain:
  • A very robust tent
  • Cooking tools
  • maintenance needs
  • Water filtration
  • Lights

Each Shelter Box is made up to meet the specific needs of the recipients.

They are always looking for more volunteers should anyone be interested.

Tom E thanked Dani and President Chad announced that the Rotary Club of Cambridge would be supporting the cause!
