President Heidi called the meeting to order at 12:32 - this is our first FULL ZOOM meeting of the second wave...

Secretary Larissa P reported we had 20 members, not including Mike T who joined us a little later

Two guests, being our speaker Tova Davidson, and Ola Lekan, guest of Paul McM.

There seem to be some funny business with Paul T. C., Jim McP, and Paul McM - although seemingly alone...   their speakers and mics were creating feedback, almost as if they were in the same room with each other....

None today....  Johny J. says the pot has been invested to collect interest until we figure out if we can keep it going remotely...

- Linda B - Ivana was interviewed last night on CTV about the auction, and there will be a front page story in the Cambridge Times today - Ivana speaking of her experience with The Coping Centre.  Not only is the auction going to raise a great deal of money for the Centre, but the exposure being brought to them is priceless!

- Rena H - presently has 330 pairs of socks, with a few more on the way - what a success!!

- Todd L - told us all that our partnership with the Cambridge Bingo and Gaming Centre is INCREDIBLE; we have received close to $10,000; we are now reviewing requests from around Cambridge to put these funds to good use.

- also Todd L - put out a good word for Lisa at Kelly Green's Flowers; as you know Lisa REALLY supports us through our Roses campaign, and like many small businesses, she would love to see us if we're in the market for some Christmas displays, flowers, etc.

- Linda B - reports surgery on Guy's hand went very well

- Paul T. C. - was having fun celebrating Trump's Thanks Giving Day with his best buds

- Tom E - really good news for his wife.....  he's ran out of excuses, so has begun painting the house....

- President Heidi - listed some special days for some special people :)  including a birthday cake, and with great effort, Tom E, Dr. Tom, and Rena H managed to blow out the candle!

- Jim McP - reminded us it is Foundation Month, and he stepped us through the first 3 areas of Rotary Service

     1. working for Peace

     2. fighting disease

     3. Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene    Next week we'll get the remaining 4!

- Rena H - looking for a few more volunteers on Wednesday December 9, 3:30pm to 5:00pm for Langs Community Christmas Dinner.  Members will be assisting with curbside hand outs, and delivering to families who can't make it in.

- President Heidi - reminded us the GCC could really use our support, so if you're ordering out anyway, please consider the GCC!

Tova Davidson spoke to us from Sustainable Waterloo Region, a Not for Profit that is pushing sustainability in the Region.

 

- we have the necessary tech, what we don't have is the will...

- we need a cultural shift, for EVERYONE to consider the environment in all they do

- eating beef is the worst food for the environment (raising, processing, transporting, etc.)

- if global emissions don't reduce by 45% in the next 10 years, we will have caused a irrevocable climate disaster

- Canada is the WORST offender in the WORLD (per capita)

- Canada emits 3 TIMES the average G20 country (per capita)

- There are proven case studies of companies growing, and being extremely successful WHILE drastically reducing their carbon foot print - it IS possible, we just have to have the will

- for individuals, we should consider:

1. update insulation, windows, and HVAC

2. drive less

3. eat less animal products, like beef

 

It is great to learn we have someone with Tova's passion heading up our efforts, but without everyone getting on board.....   we're going to lose....
