Leaving the bitter sweet news to the end - Florence is moving to Edmonton to be with family as of middle of May. Alvin - Pearson Airport Security
Matt introduced our speaker - Alvin Safarlie - who is currently the security Coordinator with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority.
He graduated from the Royal Grenada Police Academy with specialized military training from JFK special Service and training centre, NC. Served with the Royal Cdn Armey as a reservist.
His responsibilities includes - but not limited to....explosive detection, investigation and disposal of explosive materials. Airport security oversight, coordination, detection, prevention, recovery plans associated with unlawful interference to civil aviation.
Alvin also Liaises with Police, Transport Canada, and other security partners in events of any type of security breach.
I think Alvin may have to come back for a part two - so many interesting facts but couldn't imagine being on call all of the time.
Facts you may not know about Pearson - Lgest airport in Canada, 4th largest in NAmerica for traffic flow, 55000 employees (yes no typo), 47mln passengers per year, 465000 aircraft movements and 80000 fire calls. Peel police, CSIS(Cdn security intelligence service) and Fire on sight.
Most expensive in the world to fly out of for taxes !
Two main threats - Insider threats more local - and Alvin co-ordinates with local police or agencies and External more homeland security issues.
Many other facts and stories however, Alvin also mentioned what the future had in store - forecast for 2037 - goal is Hamilton cargo only and Pearson will be completely domestic - another terminal to be created to carry the huge increase in traffic (85 mln passengers, 200+thousand flights per year,632000 aircraft movements) and the area around Pearson will be secured area to accommodate for that traffic flow. Gone will be the parking areas as well as the hotels.  Super interesting talk - Brian thanked the speaker.
