Stories
Opening and Sgt at Arms Report
President Linda opened the meeting.  Chad recited the 4 way test and Todd gave his standard Invocation.  SAA Dr. Kim reported quite a few members in attendance and 4 guests: Bob Bedford, Andrew Leith, Alison de Muy, and Jackie Cox.
50-50 Draw

Dr. Kim ran the draw today.  The odds were long and the pot was small, so not as many investors as usual.   Last week's big winner, Karen, had her ticket drawn twice.  Paul M was sitting beside me fuming, and was getting ready to use his military training.  Fortunately Karen lost both times.  Interesting fact: Paul has been in the club for six years.

Good News
Bob B brought our speaker, Alison, today.  And he expressed his appreciation for Paul T.
Paul T appreciated Pres. Linda.
Karen appreciated her win last week.

Jokester
Jokester Paul M re-used a joke today about the job perks of a delivery driver.  I've heard it before so I can only give it a 7.5 laugh rating.

Program
We started today with the induction of our first family member Kim Gagne.  Kim was welcomed by all, even though she is already a fixture in the club.

For our main program, past member and guest Bob Bedford introduced Alison de Muy, Director of Strategy and Innovation with Canadian Mental Health Association, Waterloo-Wellington.
Some of the high points (you can download her full presentation here.)
  • The health care burden of mental illness exceeds that of all cancers combined, yet it gets only 6% of the health care budget.  There is a stigma that is getting less over time but still there.
  • One in four Canadians will experience mental illness at some point in their lives, which means that virtually everyone is touched by it.
  • Mental illness leads to 4000 suicides per year in Canada, with the most prevalent group being men aged 40 to 55.
  • CMHA operates a 24/7 help line for those experiencing mental illness, as well as concerned friends and family.  1-844-HERE247 (1-844-437-3247)
  • Mental illness and substance abuse are commonly linked.  Healthy drinking rates for women 10/wk, for men 14/wk.  And size matters. Those are regular sized drinks (12oz beer 5%, 6oz wine, 1oz shot).
  • The Waterloo-Wellington branch of CMHA is the largest in Canada, with 450 employees.  In Cambridge they operate out of Langs.
  • CMHA has moved to team-based care, which avoids multiple appointments.
Watch for a CMHA awareness campaign coming later this year.
In thanking our speaker, Marcia and Linda both shared some of their own personal history.
