Stories
Opening and Sgt at Arms Report
Prez Chad hosted the meeting.  Steve did the 4 way test and  Amy (Paul T's daughter) did the Invocation. SAA Kaylee announced we had 24 members present and 5 guests: Paul T's daughter Amy and son-in-law Andrew, Mike Easton (guest of Keith) and speakers Mike and Christie Miller.
50-50 Draw

Raffle Meister John J was in fine form for today's 50/50 draw. Pot is just over $500. Ticket holders Dennis and Amy gave us a chance at the pot again next week.
Good News
Paul T circled around to our weekly lunch after a party tour in Wasaga over the weekend to celebrate a friend's 60th and a Remax party in Toronto last night.
Jim J received an $80K order from a previous business contact .... funny how things circle around.

Announcements and Upcoming Events
Best Bites Update: Leslee reminded us that we have just 3 more weeks to go! To date, approx. 250 tickets and 20 corporate tables are sold. We could still use a few more corporate table sales as well as individual sales. Tickets and more info available at www.bestbitestickets.ca.  Date is Sept 8th. Shade's Mills. Caribbean theme.
Satellite Meeting Update:  This week's Tuesday night meeting was well attended. Next meeting is Tues, Aug 27 and will be offsite from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Wave Maker Craft Brewery & Distillery. Everyone is welcome - Rotarians, guests, partners and friends. Please let Roger or Paul T know if you are attending as we need to let the folk at Wave Maker know of how many to expect.
Annual Club BBQ - No mention was made of the annual club BBQ at Marcia and Randy's last week (unless I missed that). Perhaps what happens at the Clam Shack is to stay at the Clam Shack?!?!? I was there an it was a fabulous time of fellowship and terrific food. Thanks go out to the Renners for being such awesome folks and for sharing their lovely space!
Bulletin Editor Opportunity - While it was not officially announced, we are in need of another member to help out with our weekly bulletins. If interested in having the power to do character assassinations of club members as well as provide weekly wit, please let Chad, Mike or Heidi know. In the meantime, Marcia has offered to take notes to cover for the absence of all bulletin editors on August 29th and Heidi will input the notes to make sure we have a bulletin that day. Jim McP will be chairing that day as our Prez and his wife (collectively known as "Chim") will be off on a little getaway. Rumour has it these two are soon celebrating 25 years of marriage!

WE HAVE A NEW MEMBER!!
Dr Phil Sammut was inducted into our club today. YEAH! Welcome to the fold, Phil!

Further into the future, mark your calendars:
  • Nov 29, 2019 - Christmas Party at Galt Country Club
  • June 19, 2020 - President's Ball at The Cambridge Mill

Program
Keith introduced Christie and Mike Miller of Kids Can Play (KCP). Christie and Mike are a brother and sister team with Christie serving as Executive Director and Mike as President.  Kids Can Play was formed in 1992. Their mission is to pay the enrollment fee for financially disadvantaged children to participate in sports, music and art programs offered in the City of Cambridge.  They pride themselves on having low overhead and on giving high return to the local community. They do this by operating on less than 10% overhead costs.  Last year they were able to give out 592 grants compared to 501 in the previous year. They also pride themselves on having 'spur of the moment' fundraising to ensure that no one is turned away and, for the past 7 years, they have not have a waiting list of applicants.  Christie shared some stories, noting that they uphold anonymity for all applicants, and also mentioned that Rotary was instrumental in helping them out in the mid 90's by donating $5,000. More info is at www.kidscanplay.ca
Marcia thanked the speaker and Prez Chad wrapped up the meeting.
