PP Larry B - introduced our ZOOM speaker, Brampton Rotarian since 1985, John Lomax. Some of the details of John's talk: - North America.... used to be (or still is) referred to by Indigenous people as 'Turtle Island'; as that's the name they gave it thousands of years ago... - 1/3 of all 18-35 year old Indigenous males fought in either a world war, or the Korean war - Our relationship really started out badly, in 1860, with Sir John A. MacDonald saying we need to "Take the Indian out of the child". - it's taken us 7 generations to get where we are today... and it will probably take another 7 generations until we come out the other side HIP (Honouring Indigenous Peoples) was started in 2014, and has 3 main objectives: 1. Build relationships - how can we help 2. Learn (their ways) and Share (their knowledge) 3. Walk together It is to reach all across Canada, using Rotary; the intent is to have one HIP champion in each club in the Country to assist, and for each club to support this initiative. Linda B thanked John for speaking with us today. President Heidi offered official thanks from the club - and added some major milestones that some of us have crossed this month: Birthdays in August! Larissa, Chad, Murray, Sukhi, and Karen S. Rotary Anniversaries! 2 years: Roger, Mike M 1 year: Clayton T. Have a great week - and please attend next week for Treasurer Tom's budget presentation!! |
