Sir John Jonas was the man in charge today - and the pot is probably around $50 as this is the first draw from a new deck

PP Jim McPherson was confirmed a loser...   and Dennis B. followed in his footsteps
Good News
Paul McM - was in Winnipeg to celebrate two birthdays - his grandson turned 3 (a twin?) and his Mother-in-Law turned...  94!!
Chris W - spent a solid and very enjoyable 7 weeks at their cottage, just about the best summer ever - but now she's back, so that she can attend a Scottish reunion, then off to Berlin -j thanks for stopping by!
Reena - had no money.....  but went on anyway to tell us about her daughter who has been hired by Kinbridge in the field she hopes to pursue, so all is GREAT!

Announcements and Upcoming Events
Leslie - thanked everyone who contributed and/or attended Best Bites over the weekend, it was a GREAT success!  She is also super please with herself that she had the foresight to volunteer to chair it next year - yay!!  Thank you Leslie!
PP Jim - mentioned the Euchre night coming up, which is all sold out....  so if you wanted in, it's too late!  But you can still volunteer - contact Marcia
Todd - unfortunately our on-line sales for Roses is still having issues - We hope to send an email to all members Monday stating whether it's back up or not....  until then:
- Please sell roses George Szczepski style!  ie. track them yourself, collect the money, and deliver them yourself.
Although with this hic-up, our sales are likely to be significantly lower, there's not enough time to organize anything better - but if every Rotarian sells even 10 dozen, we'll beat last year!  Even 5 dozen - please, just sell what you can, thanks!!

Program
Marcia  introduced Anne Tinker, Executive Director of Cambridge Shelter Corporation - The Bridges - also a long time member of the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise.

Anne was involved from the VERY beginning, and was Executive Director for many years before retiring.  She has recently been rehired to oversee an over hall of the whole organization - from the Board of Directors, to the services that are delivered.  The points I found interesting...
  • Cocaine (smoked) used to be the biggest problem drug; now it's opioids and crystal meth – which are taken intravenously, and hence our current problem with improperly discarded needles

  • Meth is an absolutely horrible drug, taking someone from sleeping to completely uncontrollable in a couple minutes, taking 3 – 4 EMS personnel to physically get them under control.

  • Wednesday evening, they had 77 guests staying the night, 12 – 15 currently are employed

  • wait times for subsidized housing in Cambridge is 9 to 10 years

  • The daily drop-in centre is open again

  • 1 doctor and 2 nurse practitioners from Langs visit twice per week

  • a psychiatrist visits once per week

  • they will soon have computers available for clients on site for job and housing searches

  • BEST program is their Trustee program, where government payment cheques come to the shelter directly in trust, where the client's rent is paid, then the remainder is given to the client; this allows the client (through the trustee) to guarantee rent will be paid when trying to find suitable housing.

  • Substantial fundraising is now being undertaken to pay off the loan secured from the Region to assist them getting back on their feet – they have fundraising events approaching, including a speaker event on November 14, the Walk to Change in December, and coming will be a Golf Play virtual golf tournament in the winter months.

Linda B thanked Anne for speaking with us today, and PP Jim wrapped it up.
