Opening and Sgt at Arms Report

Pres-Elect Chad led the meeting again today.
The 4-way test was recited by Jocelyn and Todd gave us the invocation.
SAA Erica let us know that there were 19 members present, 2 visiting Rotarians, and many guests: Don Fanstone, Mike Lawrie, Kim Gagne, Gary Hauser, Rod Hunter, Bob Thiesburger, Bob Bedford, Cathleen McPherson, Kelly McPherson, and our two speakers, Alicia Crosshear and her assistant Natalia from YMCA Employment Services.
Health and Good Cheer
All good this week.
50-50 Draw
Because there were so many guests today, Todd made a unilateral decision to give away today's take with a straight ticket draw.  There was some discussion that he was assuming too much authority and responsibility.
However he did make it work, and Mike M won an undisclosed amount.
Good News
Jim M - Within one week, went from complete boredom (golfing at Glen Abbey) to extreme excitement (smashing his Corvette into a racetrack wall).  The car was not insured for that use.  The good news?  Jim survived.
Don Fanstone - Got to deliver roses with Rebekah, and then got some brownie points with his wife Myra when Todd dropped off some roses there.
Mike M - Glad to see Bob T.
Bob Bedford - He brought some lovely ladies to present to us today, and Gary Hauser is one of his favorite guys so he gave him a necklace.  ed:I just write the news, I don't make judgements or draw conclusions.  Bob, if you're reading this, Gary is married.
At this point, good news fell apart as we witnessed former member Bob Thiesburger and Todd debase themselves publicly.  Bob praised the club for letting Todd back in even though he's not too bright.  Todd let us know that he respects his elders, except for Bob.
And it went on.  Just when you thought they were done, the other one would pop up again.
Jokester
Paul M played it safe with all the visitors today.  He told us something about the pearly gates.  Not too memorable (I've already forgotten the punch line on this one so I'm not going to rate it).

Announcements and Upcoming Events
Randy announced the upcoming formative meeting for our annual Golf Tourney.  Thurs.Oct.25 7pm at GCC.  All welcome to join the committee.
Program
Jocelyn introduced today's speaker, Alicia Crosshear, from YMCA Employment Services.
YMCA Employment Services is a provincially-funded program operating out of the Chaplin Family YMCA.
For 15 years they have been helping local employers and people looking for work.
The types of employees they most deal with are high school leavers, blue collar, and internationally-trained professionals.
Some of what they offer:
  • By appointment - counselling, support, guidance for employment seekers
  • Drop-in resources - computers for online research, resume preparation and printing
  • Helping businesses with apprenticeship paperwork
  • Youth Job Connection Program - For 15 to 29 year olds, 60hrs of workshops and activities to prepare for the workforce (paid at minimum wage)
  • Financial incentives to employers for job training, job trials, and hiring
Go to their website here to learn more about what they do.

During the Q&A, Paul TC showed some confusion about the YMCA and the YWCA.  It turns out he's been going to the wrong place all along.

Dean thanked our speaker.
