Opening and Sgt at Arms Report
President Jim McP opened the meeting.
Chris recited the Four Way Test and Joe read an Invocation. Murray led us through O Canada. Toast was made to the Queen and Canada.
Leslee was SAA. We had 16 Rotarians present and 2 guests of Sandra: Patrick Stradiotto (Dryer Vent Wizard) and Leah Landriault (Best Version Media - Guelph).
Health and Good Cheer
George reported that Graham's wife, Fran, was in an accident yesterday. Details unknown.
Former member Dee (of the infamous Dee's Bakery) had a fall a few weeks ago and is coming along well.
George also mentioned that he and John Jonas went to a Blue Jays game this week. George dropped John off before parking and, after doing so, went to find John. Turned out our boys had left their cell phones in George's car which made for an 'interesting time trying to reconnect' (George's words). Lesson learned, boys: Always hold hands and stick together!  ... Maybe wear matching lederhosen too - it's sure to separate you from the rest of the crowd.
George also commented how nice it always is to see Wilf out at our meetings - How true!

UPDATE: I rec'd an email from Graham after the meeting: Fran is OK but a little sore. YEAH!

50-50 Draw
Pedro ran the draw today. Leah drew Joe's ticket. Joe drew John's ticket.  No winners. And so, the pot continues to grow.

Good News
Paul T announced that he had 'a little throat procedure' (?) last week .... apparently he needs to get his throat muscles checked out. He told me earlier, too, that his 'throat's as wide as the 401' ..... I am exercising great restraint here ....
Paul T also announced that his daughter, Jenna, has officially joined the Cody Team as a licensed agent. Yeah! Congrats to father and to daughter!

Membership Minute was done by Cathy Gosse today - well done, Cathy!
Of special note: Cathy and her hubby recently celebrated 40 years of marriage. About 75 people attended the celebration - including the entire wedding party!
Jokester ???
The Jokester position remains un(ful)filled. We are currently accepting (and excepting) applications.
Announcements and Upcoming Events
Prez Plastic Pants Jim McP (I'm trying to make that handle stick) announced that the new name tags are in. Yeah! And thanks, Graham, for doing them. Please make a point of wearing them at meetings as it helps the staff serve us more quickly.

He also announced a Tri-Club Xmas Party at EVO Kitchen on Thurs, Dec 7 at 6pm. Entertainment by Jamie Williams. Cost is $60 per person. Guests, spouses and someone suitable for Heidi are also welcome. More info/updates closer to the date. Thanks go out to Linda, Leslee and the other 2 Club Presidents for pulling this together.

Lastly, Jim mentioned that KidsAbility is in the midst of their move and need help tomorrow (Fri) am to pack and next Monday and Tuesday to unpack. Please contact Jim if you can help!

John Jonas reminded us that Oktoberfest is just 2 1/2 weeks away. We are in need of someone to look after the food/beverage ticket booth on Saturday. Please let John know if you can help. Signs are also ready to be put out. Please take some and plant them where they'll be visible!

Katie reminded that we are on the final home stretch for Roses. Help is needed for deliveries for all four day from Tues, Oct 3 to Fri Oct, 6.

Tom S is buying a dozen roses from and for Heidi for covering for him on this bulletin. This wasn't announced but I think it's good for everyone to know. Especially him.

Program
Sandra introduced guest speaker, Patrick Stradiotto, owner and operator of Dryer Vent Wizard.  After a 21 year career in Big Box retail, Patrick decided to pursue his desire to be his own boss and run his own business.  And so, in 2015 he became the owner of Dryer Vent Wizard and has never looked back! He is very involved with Community Partners to help carry the message of dryer vent safety and he certainly gave us a very valuable education today. This is well worth reading!

The Ontario Fire Marshall's office released a report indicating that there is ONE dryer fire every 2 days! A third of these are due to lint build up in the system. Patrick even referred to lint as 'a path of fuel'.

Questions on the 'self check' list to keep your family safe:
  • Is LINT visible at the outside exit point? (if it is, there's lots more inside!)
  • Does it take more than one CYCLE to dry a load of clothes?
  • Are your clothes very HOT at the end of a drying cycle?
  • Does the TOP of your dryer get hot to touch?
  • Can you see PLASTIC or FOIL venting anywhere in your vent line?
  • Is there a moldy or burnt smell in your laundry room?
He suggested we do this self check AND REMEMBER TO REGULARLY TEST YOUR HOME SMOKE ALARM!

Other things to note:
  • The 2008 Safety Code says that vent lines should be metal (NOT plastic or metal foil as it melts in fire).
  • The two main sources of fire ignition in a dryer are (1) mechanical failure (electrical short) and (2) spark (from the motor).
  • Vent line specs refer to the "25 foot rule" - add 5 linear feet for every 90 degree elbow. Approx 20 extra feet is the recommended max.
  • Ensure joints are securely taped (don't use duct tape as it dries out) and do not use screws in the vent line.
  • 2.1-2.7 litres of water come out of an average load of clothes.
  • Joe Gowing doesn't use a dryer for his dainties. He hangs his lingerie.
  • Dryer Vent Safety not only promotes safety, it also reduces the carbon footprint.
Patrick's business services the Golden Triangle and surrounding areas. More info can be found at https://www.goldentriangledryervent.com/

Chad thanked our speaker.
