Foundation Month
Chris Wood chose to inform us about the Rotary International Foundation
We are all aware of our work with polio  .  Each polio shot is about 60 cents.    $ 50 helps out with Clean Water projects and $ 500.00 goes towards anti bullying campaigns.
Rotary International also helps out with matching grants  for qualified projects.

Program

Sandra Peltier introduced Lisa McArthur who is the Program manager at the Literacy Group.
Lisa started  as a volunteer in this area since 2003.
I made a few notes .
15% of Ontario residents where English is their first language have Level 1 literacy  (  Level 1 is lowest 5 is highest)
47% of Ontario Residents have Level 2.

In case you are wondering Level 3 is High school.
I think I got this , more than 50%of  students in the Applied system in high school will fail to get to level 3.
Without level 3 literacy you won't be able to work in trades ie plumbing , carpentry. electricity etc.
Rotary bulletin editors require Level 2  ( just seeing if you are paying attention)
If literacy rates improved by 1 % that will increase GDP by 1.5%
In Cambridge they help 260 students per year . There were 65 volunteers in Cambridge
Programs have been developed for volunteers that have limited time and are away for periods of time..
How can you help?
Time   looking for volunteers
Talent  looking for volunteers,
Treasure  please donate
Talk   become an advocate -- spread the word literacy is a problem that can be helped

President Chad gave the official thanks
