Joe introduced our speaker, Joel Doherty from Hip Developments a Waterloo company - started in 2011 as a secondary company of Meloull Blamey. They have a strong passion for Community and archictecture. They are looking after the Gas light District in Galt and the old American Standards building - Riverbank Lofts in Hespler. The are working to convert these areas into mix use developement. Creating an experience to people who live in the areas through art, dining and culture. Much like the distillery district Hip Developments is looking to create these centres outside of the GTA - a vibe that is unique and draws the people into the downtown cores and creates atmosphere and a vibrant community. The Gaslight district will a European inspired space and will be started in 2018 - they have a remodelled design that incorporates 396 units and 31500 square feet. They will keep as much as they can intact of the heritage buildings and ensure the parking challenges will be addressed. It will create 300 jobs in Cambridge, 100 companies are looking to move to the downtown core over the next five years. Thinking one building condo and one building rental. Gary and the city will be very happy with the extra property taxes the city will be receiving ! It will give Cambridge the opportunity to really take advantage of the beautiful areas along the river, attract and maintain talent and improve upon the culture, community and heritage that currently exist today. The development spans from 64 Grand Ave over to 96 Grand. The Tiger Brand building across the road will be the new home to Conestoga College and the Technology Hub (much like communitech). Hydro and City of Cambridge will also be housed in the building. Value of Construction is approx. $120MM with 600 new residents. Very exciting for Downtown Galt and Hespeler. Chris Thanked the speaker and President Paul adjourned the meeting. |
